SYNOPSISEvery American will see a piece of their own history in the characters of this inspirational and evocative story: a Jewish immigrant artist, Tateh (Gary Briggle), in search of the American dream, an upper-middle class mother (Julia Truilo) haunted by the desire for a more meaningful life, and African-American pianist Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Toby Blackwell), who thinks his shiny, new Ford Model T will bring him respect that many white Americans are not willing to give. Ragtime paints a picture of America's struggle to melt together, invoking such legendary figures as Harry Houdini, Henry Ford, J.P. Morgan, Emma Goldman, Stanford White, and Evelyn Nesbitt to add detail to the portrait of what America looked like at the turn of the century. Presented through special arrangement with and all authorized performance materials are supplied by Music Theater International, 421 West 54th Street, New York, NY 10019 |
