Synopsis

"The Importance of Being Earnest" is Oscar Wilde's romantic farce of the misadventures of two young men-about-town, John Worthing and Algernon Moncreiff. Both men lead double lives; each assumes a convenient second name to allow escape to country and city, respectively; each loves a girl who will only marry a man named, "Ernest". These complications lead to quickie baptisms, clever impersonations and just a bit of blackmail; of course, everything miraculously turns out all right in the end.

Tagline

Lost babies, true love, and cucumber sandwiches are stirred into a frothy mix as Oscar Wilde skewers the manners and morals of the upper classes.

More information

The Importance of Being Earnest Study Guide -- The source of the title is a double entendre. The adjective earnest and the man's name Ernest. Earnest, defined by Webster's Dictionary as, 1. serious in intention, purpose, or effort; sincerely zealous. 2. showing depth and sincerity of feeling, is important to each character, because each is earnest about the name Ernest. Jack and Algernon each assumes the name of Ernest because it is important to Gwendolen and Cecily that the man they marry be named Ernest.
