Synopsis

Tennesee Williams' autobiographical drama of dreams and desires, "The Glass Menagerie" tells the story of his need to leave a stifling existence both at work and home, and the fragile sister that he was forced to leave behind. In the play, his mother becomes the former Southern belle, Amanda who lives in the memory of her former charm. His sister becomes the delicate, crippled, Laura who is too shy to handle the outside world. Williams himself becomes Tom, a poet working in a shoe factory, going to the movies to dream of the existence he craves. In the end, Tom must leave home to live, leaving his family to their worlds of imagination.

Tagline

Williams' touching memory play of a beautiful and fragile sister, lost but never forgotten.

More information

The Glass Menagerie Study Guide -- The source for the play The Glass Menagerie is one of Thomas Lanier (Tennessee) Williams own early short stories, "Portrait of a Girl in Glass," which was a semi-autobiographical tale of his own upbringing in Saint Louis, Missouri. The girl in the title was his own sister Rose. After the moderate Theater Guild success of one of Williams' first plays The Battle of Angels, starring Miriam Hopkins, the playwright got a writing contract at MGM Studios and moved to Hollywood to write screenplays.
